I translated an infamous nineteenth century origin myth for the twenty first century. This story purports to reveal why humans first migrated over the Bering Strait into Alaska more than ten thousand years ago. Or, to put it another way, this is how a feud over roasted bear paws led to the migration of humans over the Bering Strait into Alaska thousands of years ago, ultimately resulting in the true discovery of America.
